MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) – Merrill police officers will make more money but also pay more toward their health care and retirement under a contract the city may approve tonight.

The City Council will vote at 7 p.m. on the two-year contract with the Merrill Professional Police Association.

Under the contract, officers would get an annual three-and-a-half percent wage increase each year. But they would also pay higher deductibles for their health insurance and contribute four percent more toward their retirement over the life of the contract.

“This is significant because we are going from a fixed dollar amount to a percentage,” city finance director Kathy Unertl said of the changes in health care costs.
