WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) More than 1,400 athletes took part in this year’s Badger State Games. Organizers say they’re satisfied with the turnout – which is down sharply compared to recent years.
Some athlete may not have gotten the word that the games were on. Last summer the Wisconsin Sports Marketing Board announced that they were cancelling the events. They were taken over in October by The Greater Wausau Convention and Visitors Bureau. This year there were fewer sports represented, and less time for athletes to sign up. Organizers expect more events and a longer sign-up period next year.
This was also the last Badger State Games that curling events were held at the Wausau Curling Barn at Marathon Park. Those events will move to the new curling center that’s being built on Wausau’s east side. When finished, it will be the largest facility of its kind in North America.
The Wausau organizers are also taking over the administration of the summer Badger State Games, although those events will be held in the Fox Valley through 2015. They too will likely move to the Wausau area after that.
