STEVENS POINT, Wis – (WSAU) - Stevens Point has a new fire chief.
The police and fire commission voted unanimously today to hire interim fire chief Tracy Kujawa as the full time fire chief for the city. Kujawa is a former deputy chief of fire prevention and EMS, and says she's happy to have the new role. “Really, I'm honored and I hope to be taking this job in a way the betters the city.”
Kujawa says her background as the head of EMS for the city will help both her and the community in the future. “Most of the calls we go out on these days involve EMS or paramedic services. I think I bring a well rounded background to that with me.”
There is a controversy over the list of finalists. It’s hasn’t been made public, despite a request from the Stevens Point Journal newspaper. State open-meetings laws says the list of finalists for high profile jobs should be made public. The police and fire commission would only say that there were 8 finalists for the position. No further information on those other choices has been released at this time.
This is the third attempt by the city to hire someone for this position.
