WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wausau's public health and safety committee has re-issued a license that once belonged to Breakaway Night Club.
Committee chair Lisa Rasmussen says the city and the committee are committed to making sure those licenses are handed out in an orderly fashion. “At this point now enough months have passed that waiting any longer is hindering other people's progress.” The committee has issued the license to a owner who is planning on opening a wine and tapas bar named the Square Cork in the spring of 2012.
It's been five months since the health and safety committee moved for non-renewal on the license controlled by Ray Schwartz. The club has been closed since mid-May while the status of the license was in limbo. Schwartz had been hoping to sell both the property and the license at the same time, but city Attorney Anne Jacobson informed him that the license could not be transferred to a new owner unless one was immediately available to purchase the property.
The bar previously went without an entertainment license at the start of the year after management at Breakaway were uncooperative with police and could not control their crowds. Crowds at the nightclub dropped after that and Schwartz says he just didn't have any more business.
