WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Your vote could help the Women's Community win a $3,000 grant for new playground equipment at their yet-to-be built domestic violence shelter.

The non-profit agency is one of five organizations competing in the Community Grant Project sponsored by the local soda distributor Mid-Wisconsin Beverage.

Other entries include Aspirus Wausau Hospital for a new neonatal resuscitation cart, the Career Closet for professional clothing, a new commercial refrigerator at the Neighbor's Place and buying socks and underwear for those in dire need through the Workplace Volunteer Council.

“There are four other projects that are worthy as well, but we hope we come out number one,” said Women's Community executive director Jane Graham Jennings.

Graham Jennings said the money would pay for kid-friendly equipment at the shelter. Agency officials hope the equipment offers children a retreat from the stress of the situation that they may be facing.

“We want to give them a space where they can hang out and play and let go of all the fear and the insecurities that living in a strange place can bring,” Graham Jennings said.
