UNDATED (WSAU) The winner of next week’s Republican primary for governor could have one-half to one-fifth as much campaign money as the Democrats’ main contender. New reports show that Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker had $1.2-million in his campaign fund on August 30th. And former Congressman Mark Neumann had $430,000 left, as he and Walker compete for the G-O-P nomination.
Neumann has spent one-and-a-half million dollars more than Walker this year. And while there has not been much independent polling, U-W La Crosse professor Joe Heim says Neumann’s spending spree indicates that he must be catching up to Walker – who was the G-O-P’s endorsed candidate.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has $2.6-million in the bank in his Democratic bid for governor. His campaign says they’ve bought enough T-V ads to keep a steady presence in voters’ minds. Neumann has spent the most so far this year – $5.7-million to $4.2-million for Walker.
Barrett, without a major primary challenger, has spent just under $3-million. Neumann has paid for most of his campaign himself – around $4-million worth.
