MERRILL, Wis (WSAU) Plans to renovate the Lincoln County courthouse have hit a snag.

The county wants to enlarge the second floor but the state historical society put a condition on the project last month. They say the second-story expansion needs to be larger than first proposed, so it blends in better with the rest of the building. That change would increase the cost of the project from 1-point-2 to 1-point-7-million dollars.

The county could take the extra money from its cash reserves. Some county board members are opposed, saying that money might be needed to cover funding cuts for other programs. The extra cost could also be put on the April ballot for referendum, but it may not be approved because of the tough economy.

The county board will make a decision on whether to proceed at their March 16th meeting.
