WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Wausau has finalized a compromise with the state transportation department over a controversial highway reconstruction project.

The City Council voted 10-2 Tuesday night to endorse the compromise that will keep two access ramps when the DOT rebuilds the Highway 51-U-K interchange in 2013.

The DOT’s favored plan would have closed all four access ramps while the city wanted to retain each one.

Marathon County’s infrastructure committee approved the same plan last week.

The Council passed the plan even though some residents had filed a petition supporting the city’s original position.
