OSHKOSH, Wis (WSAU) The E-A-A grounds in Oshkosh kept drying up yesterday – and it created more room for airplanes and campers arriving at the annual Air-Venture show.
About 10,000 vintage planes normally travel to Oshkosh for the week-long event. But after 10-inches of rain in the last three-and-a-half weeks, many planes had been diverted to airports in Fond du Lac, Manitowoc, and Appleton. Others settled on taxiways at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh – which normally becomes the world’s busiest airport during E-A-A-Week. A few mass arrivals were canceled, including one by 100 Bonanza planes.
Some campers were sent to other large parking lots around Oshkosh. But all of the E-A-A’s events are still on. They included a massive fly-over yesterday by D-C-Threes to celebrate their 75th anniversary – and a concert last night by the group Chicago. Also, it was announced that pilot and long-time member Rod Hightower will become E-A-A’s new president. He’ll replace Tom Poberezny, who will stay on as the group’s chairman. Poberezny will also keep running the Air-Venture show.
