MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - Wisconsin is among 4 states denied requests to ignore a new federal law aimed at protecting the voting rights of deployed troops.

The Defense Department granted waivers to 5 states. The U.S. Department of Justice says it is working with Wisconsin and the other states to bring them into compliance.

However, it also says it will sue if a state doesn't voluntarily follow the rules. The state election board says it is committed to ensuring all military and overseas voters can fully participate in Wisconsin elections.

The state is trying to find a way to meet a deadline for sending ballots to military personnel and overseas voters. It asked for the waiver because this state's late primary makes it impossible to get ballots mailed the required 45 days before the general election.
