MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) – State regulators want to hear what you think about a proposed biomass power plant in Rothschild.

The Public Service Commission is accepting public comment on the application from We Energies through June 1st. You can share your comments through the PSC Web site, by sending a letter or speaking up at a public hearing that will be held later this year.

“The best way to make your voice heard is to get involved,” said PSC spokeswoman Teresa Smith.

Smith said every comment is included in the formal, legal record that is independently reviewed by each of the three commissioners.

We Energies unveiled plans last September for the $255 million plant. The Milwaukee-based utility said the plant, which would burn wood waste that comes from sawmills and loggers within a 75-mile radius, would reduce emissions by 30 percent. It would also provide steam to the Domtar paper mill next door.

If the PSC approves the project, then We Energies could start construction next year.
