STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) – Stevens Point has moved a step closer to replacing its community development director.

The city’s personnel committee recommended the City Council hire former Wausau community development director Michael Morrissey above the minimum salary.

The Council will vote on the recommendation Monday.

Morrissey will earn $70,246 in his first year. That’s more than the minimum of $63,036. Morrissey is eligible to advance to a higher level after two years.

The salary Morrissey will earn in Point is less than the nearly $90,000 he made when he left Wausau.

Mayor Andrew Halverson argued for a salary above the minimum because of Morrissey’s more than 25 years experience. Morrissey was Wausau’s community development director from January 1989 to June 2008.

Morrissey would start November 16 to ensure a seamless transition with current director John Gardner before he retires December 2.
